Mixed media artwork in color pencil and watercolor, 2025
The gesture of this figure called for space and sweep and sumptuous leaves swirling around her limbs. I had been wanting to work larger for some time, and this was the break-out piece. The title was given to me by a fellow artist when she saw the work for the first time. “That’s got to be called ‘Release’, right? It feels like - ah!” and my friend mimicked the figure in a rush of satisfied joy.
This original artwork comes matted and framed and is ready to hang.
Watercolor white line woodblock monotype, 2025
This burst of color was inspired by the fall foliage and blazing blue skies of autumn. It was made using a hybrid painting-printing technique called “white line” woodblock printing, pioneered by the Provincetown Printers in early 1900s Massachusetts. Each section is made by painting directly onto a hand-carved woodblock, and then pressing the paper into the block to transfer the pigment. Since watercolor dries so quickly, I must work in tiny sections at a time, building up the piece bit by bit. This piece took weeks to complete, and kept me in a state of meditative contemplation of orange, blue, yellow and gray. My hope is that the piece will serve you in a similar way and provide a place for your mind to wander, or rest, as you need.
About Alexis
I’m a non-binary artist and writer living on ancestral Tamién land, Sayanta (aka the Santa Cruz Mountains) inspired by trees, flowers, sand hills, and sky, trying to remember how to belong to this tapestry of wonder I get to live within.
My art is an offering to these beings: spells I weave with bright colors, bold textures, and fantastical figures. I pour big love into all of my artworks, and I hope they bring joy and inspiration to you!
