Alexis Macnab (ey/em/eir)
Artist - Curator - Writer
Hello! I’m a Santa Cruz Area multidisciplinary artist, with a background in theater and dance, now working as a writer and visual artist. In 2021, I moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains (Sayante homeland in unceded Tamien territory, neighboring Mutsun, Awaswas, and Muwekma unceded territories). I feel blessed to live with and learn from the trees here, the fungi, fog and moonlight: all the people who also make this place home. I create works on paper exploring luscious forms and unexpected bodies using bold and vivid palettes. (Also, I use ey/em/eir pronouns for myself, and some of my characters.)
For the first twenty years of my professional life I worked in the performing arts as an actor, dancer and puppeteer, then as a director, writer and deviser of site-specific and immersive performance. When the covid pandemic shut down my field and the biggest uprisings for racial justice in 60 years swelled my streets, I knew it was time to change my life.
I turned to writing and visual art, passions I could devote myself to without needing to rent other peoples’ time or space, and I knew that my work needed to acknowledge the world I live in with all of its beauties and terrors. Sometimes spending time with a single cyclamen bloom feels like an act of profound reclamation and resistance. And sometimes it doesn’t and I’ve got to make a protest sign (or 50), y’know?
In all of this I am guided by pigment, movement, narrative pressure, kinetic curiosity, and gratitude for sunlight through green leaves, petrichor, and my partner, Thadeus.
